let spring begin says screenwriter Kathy patterson

Welcome March 2022

Not sure about you, but I’m DONE with winter. And March puts us 20 day closer to Spring.

I’m looking forward to seeing flower buds poking through the ground and on the trees. The milder weather that March may offer means I can get out more, walking my neighborhood or along our local walking trails. Yeah!

I’m seeing more sun too!

This March I’m running behind on two new TV pilots. I should’ve been in the writing stage by last Fall.

But I’m determined to catch up.

This month I’m pushing my to-do page counts from 3 pages per day to 5.

It’s a lot to crunch out. So far I’ve been able to keep up the pace, balancing work and writing by staying up until 11pm and midnight most nights. We’ll see how long I can last doing that.

Maintaining this schedule keeps me in a brain fog until around 10am each morning (plus the fact that I’m weaning myself off caffeine lol), but I tend to write better in the afternoon and evening.

A win, win right?

So far it is.

Being behind in my writing, has me missing quite a few contest deadlines for this year. I’m okay with that. I still have a couple of scripts out at contests that will announce this year.

2021 was hellacious year for me with the shocking death of my brother, and my being diagnosed with generalized anxiety PTSD related to that.

But I’m progressing!

My anxiety has abated. I’m sleeping better. I’m able to focus on tasks like I used to.

So I can do this. The challenge is ON.

To catch up on my script production, I’m tackling two TV Pilots at once. I’m alternating between the two. Brainstorming and outline one, then the other. Breaking out scenes and characterization for one, then the other. Same with writing the Teasers and Acts. The bible and one-sheets.

Late February, I completed the Teaser and Act I of my sci-fi/steampunk thriller – relishing the ability to actually WRITE rather than outline and plot.

Now for two weeks in March, I’m switching to my sci-fi drama that’s set on an Ohio farm.

I enjoyed writing the initial scenes!

It’s so refreshing.

Can’t wait to write more.

After spending much of December and January researching, brainstorming, plotting and outlining, I forgot how FUN it is to writing!

I look forward to engaging the “awaiting” page each day. Once you start writing, there’s not too many blank pages to face.

Don’t get me wrong ~ it’s work. It’s hard. Really hard. Trying to stay on top of each story, all the different characters. But I’m enjoying the challenge. I love these two projects.

And that’s all we writers want, right? To enjoy the writing process. To truly enjoy the story we’re writing.

So WELCOME March. Hurry up SPRING.

What are you doing this month? Are you writing? Are you enjoying the story you’re telling?

I hope so.

Being passionate about what you write is key to being a productive and successful writer.

Your voice will ring true within your story.
