Steampunk offers that.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scriptchic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/20190825_094726_0000.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-697\" src=\"http:\/\/scriptchic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/20190825_094726_0000.png\" alt=\"Steampunk screenplay by Kay Patterson\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>I like the look of it. The mechanical gears, gadgetry, machines. The Victorian era setting. The mystique of it.<\/p>\r\n<p>I know the story I have in mind to write. I have my title: <strong>Rhenium<\/strong>. Have m cast of characters. But before I start to sketch out my scenes I immerse myself in the genre of Steampunk.<\/p>\r\n<p>I gather my collection of Steampunk anthologies:\u00a0<em>Steampunk,\u00a0<\/em>by Ann&amp; Jeff VanderMeer, volumes I, II, III. I read two stories from each volume &#8211; by the flip book open and choose a story at random method. I jot notes of what I liked about the character descriptions, settings, gadgetry used.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then I make a date to settle in with a large bowl of buttered popcorn and binge watch my favorite Steampunk movies.<\/p>\r\n<p>On a Friday night I start with:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Van Helsingborg, 2004<\/li>\r\n<li>The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, 2003<\/li>\r\n<li>Hellboy, 2004<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Saturday, bright and early, I continue with:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Hellboy II, 2008<\/li>\r\n<li>Sherlock Holmes, 2009<\/li>\r\n<li>The Prestige, 2006<\/li>\r\n<li>The Golden Compass, 2007<\/li>\r\n<li>Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, 2012<\/li>\r\n<li>Brother Grimm, 2005<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>I save the last two for Sunday:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Series of Unfortunate Events, 2011<\/li>\r\n<li>Wild Wild West, 1999<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scriptchic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Steampunk2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-699 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/scriptchic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Steampunk2.png\" alt=\"steampunk screenplay by Kay Patterson\" width=\"200\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a>Monday afternoon, I scourer the web for Steampunk was additional images of inspiration. I print those. Pin them to the bulletin board in my office.<\/p>\r\n<p>Now I\u2019m pumped. Ready to flesh out my characters and initial scenes for\u00a0<em>Rhenium<\/em>. This is where the fun begins!<\/p>\r\n<p>Sometimes it takes a second sitting on a movie or two to keep me in sync with the era. But with Steampunk the gadgets and intrigue are key.<\/p>\r\n<p>I let you know how it all works out.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the meantime, if you\u2019re not familiar with Steampunk, I suggest you watch one or more of the movies I listed above.
